We discovered St Martin de Castillon (SMC) while looking for a family house to buy around Apt. The property should meet two requirements : an authentic house in a true village in the Luberon National Park, meaning not a village lived-in by tourists only in the summer time! Not as simple as that! And yet! Our search ended on a snowy day of winter 1999 smelling the good smoke of burning wood coming from the chimneys.

You get to Saint Martin driving through the cork oaks, vineyards, fields of lavender and olive trees… and suddenly, after a new bend, you discover the stone village of SMC perched on a mountain and its baked clay curved tiles. At the top of the rempart a flag is flying over.

You park under a tree at the entrance of the village. Facing you, the old Luberon mountain covered in wrinkles looks like a sage looking at you and your bustling life. The west entry, “la porte du banquet” invites you to enter in the heart of the village.

Bar de la fontaine
Bar de la fontaine

At the opposite side of SMC, “la porte de la Mane” with the “bar de la fontaine”: the heart of social activity! At sunset, it’s so delightful drinking outside and talking to friends near the refreshing fountain. Further, “les aires” and its unlikely football field inhabited by the moles, its stonebanks for insomniac teenagers, its carousel for kids… who will seat in a few years on the stonebanks in the evening… and will have, still later, an apéritif at the sunset nearby the fountain of the bar. Such is life in SMC.

Lastly, “la piscine René Olive”, the cutest swimming-pool in the world, its non-olympic pool for swimmers and a small one for kids, in a dreaming but real scenary! (opening July and August)
